Wild bees are less abundant but show better pollination behaviour for sweet cherry than managed pollinators

چکیده

Pollinating insects provide pollination services to many crop species, including sweet cherry (Prunus avium L.), and this can be delivered by both managed wild pollinators. Managed pollinators are often used pollinate a range of fruit crops, but increasingly the role is being studied. However, importance pollinator species depends on their relative abundance effectiveness, which foraging activity variability throughout day. In study, insect visitors blossoms were observed in commercial orchards explore abundance, diversity behaviour different groups A total 1,174 from 31 recorded visiting over 2 years, 71.0% visits (western honeybee, Apis mellifera L. buff-tailed bumblebee, Bombus terrestris L.) compared 29.0% On average, solitary bees visited blossom for longest duration (20.7 (±2.0 SE) seconds), whereas queen bumblebees greatest number flowers per minute (mean 19.0 (±1.3 SE)). As these contacted stigmas more moved frequently between tree rows than hoverflies, they likely facilitate cross-pollination. The also showed variation behavioural parameters day, less was when all considered altogether. This suggests diverse communities might expected stable service cherry. study demonstrates that whilst pollinators, bee bumblebee behaviours effective at enhancing orchards, which, turn, lead increased yields.

Conserving wild bees for crop pollination

A substantial proportion of the worlds crops rely on insect pollination, yet for many we have little or no information as to which pollinators are most effective. Pollinator management has traditionally focussed exclusively on one species, the honeybee, Apis mellifera. Yet this bee is not able to adequately pollinate some crops, and is an unreliable pollinator in cold and wet climates. Natural ...

Wild bees enhance honey bees' pollination of hybrid sunflower.

Pollinators are required for producing 15-30% of the human food supply, and farmers rely on managed honey bees throughout the world to provide these services. Yet honey bees are not always the most efficient pollinators of all crops and are declining in various parts of the world. Crop pollination shortages are becoming increasingly common. We found that behavioral interactions between wild and...

Butterflies visit more frequently, but bees are better pollinators: the importance of mouthpart dimensions in effective pollen removal and deposition

Pollination studies often use visitation frequency of potential pollinators as an indicator of their importance, but this is only one component and may not reflect actual pollen transfer rates. In this study, we determine the most effective pollinator group of Angadenia berteroi, a tropical perennial subshrub with large yellow flowers that set few fruits. We determined visitation frequency and ...

Physically Active Men Show Better Semen Parameters than Their Sedentary Counterparts

Objective The quality of semen depends upon several factors such as environment, life style, physical activity, age and occupation. The aim of this study was to analyze and compare the conventional and functional semen parameters in men who practice vigorous physical activity to those of sedentary men. MaterialsAndMethods Semen samples from 17 physically active men and 15 sedentary men were col...
